Michelson Interferometer

Michelson Interferometer is used for determination of wave length of Monochromatic Light. The Michelson interferometer is a common configuration for optical interferometry and was invented by Albert Abraham Michelson. Using a beam splitter, a light source is split into two arms. Each of those is reflected back toward the beamsplitter which then combines their amplitudes interferometrically.

Uses and Features of Michelson Interferometer:

  • Accurate measurement of small changes in length
  • Determination of difference in wave length between sodium D lines
  • Determination of Monochromatic or white light fringes
  • Measurement of Refractive indices
